Maternal Health Task Force

Strengthening maternal health across Virginia through partnership and impact.

The Maternal Health Task Force (MHTF) brings together partners, healthcare professionals and individuals passionate about maternal health across the Commonwealth to strengthen collaboration across Virginia and improve maternal health outcomes. The Task Force identified seven key areas of impact: access to care, safety, perinatal experience, data to action, policy work, infrastructure work, and collaborative self-advocacy. These are further explained in the maternal health task force (MHTF) strategic plan.

All of our work is for our community of pregnant and postpartum women and their families throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. We are first and foremost accountable to our community to facilitate systems change that willimprove their perinatal experience in the ways that matter most to them.
The perinatal period often puts women and their families at risk and in danger in a variety of ways. Increasing safety for our community means not only creating a safe environment with accessible quality care but also listening and responding to the expressed needs of pregnant and postpartum women.
We are committed to advancing policies that reflect the lived experiences and priorities of perinatal women, families, and providers. By grounding advocacy in data and community voice, we aim to drive meaningful, systemic change across Virginia.
Expanding provider capacity and care options is essential to relieve pressure on the current workforce and ensures families get the right support when they need it most.
We have community health data, but we need to make it more accessible to the communities it represents, and we need more data about what has been and is working for community members and community health in perinatal care.
To create lasting impact in perinatal and infant health, we are building the infrastructure for collaboration, evaluation, and funding that will outlive any single initiative. This work ensures the Maternal Health Task Force, and the progress we make, can be sustained for years to come.
We envision a maternal health system where perinatal women and their families are empowered to advocate for themselves and build strong, respectful relationships with their providers. This work supports both families and healthcare professionals through shared knowledge, mutual trust, and community-rooted collaboration.

Maternal Health Strategic Plan

The Maternal Health Strategic Plan outlines the strategic goals and objectives that will lead transformative maternal health efforts across the Commonwealth of Virginia. This plan was developed with significant input from the community and other vested supporters. This plan is intended to guide all work around maternal health across the state to ensure we are communicating openly and working collaboratively towards the collective goal of ensuring the health and well-being of all pregnant and parenting women living in Virginia.
