Value in the Numbers: How to Get the Most Out of VNPC’s Maternal Health Data Dashboards

Improving maternal health starts with understanding the data. VNPC’s new data dashboards can help bridge the gap. On June 18, VNPC’s Data Team hosted a webinar demonstrating how to access, navigate, and apply the dashboards to support quality improvement (QI) efforts across Virginia. The webinar was intended to help healthcare professionals, QI champions, and community members make the most of VNPC’s interactive data dashboards.

VNPC’s maternal health dashboards were launched in April 2026 and provide valuable insights and data visualizations of VNPC’s QI initiatives involving perinatal substance use and perinatal mental health, as well as recommendations from Virginia’s Maternal Mortality Review Team (MMRT). From just getting acquainted with VNPC’s data dashboards to utilizing them to showcase progress to facility leadership, the webinar offers practical guidance on several topics. VNPC’s Data Team walks viewers through various QI measures, data interpretation, and identifying QI opportunities. One focus of the webinar was using dashboard insights to communicate progress with leadership and staff. The data dashboards help to translate data into clear, actionable information, with an overall effect of supporting informed, data-driven decision-making to improve outcomes for mothers across Virginia.

Throughout the webinar, VNPC’s Data Team walks viewers through several important topics, including:

  • Accessing the dashboards: Learn where to find VNPC’s dashboards on the Data Dashboards webpage under the Reports section of the VNPC website. Hosted on Tableau Public, the dashboards are available to anyone interested in exploring VNPC’s maternal health QI data.
  • Navigating the dashboard interface: Take a guided tour of the data dashboards’ layouts, including any interactive features, such as how to filter data and explore trends.
  • Understanding quality measures: Gain a better understanding of the outcome, process, and structure measures used in VNPC’s EBDC-SUD and SMILE initiatives.
  • Interpreting trends and visualizations: Learn how to read the charts, graphs, and other data visualizations in the dashboards to recognize patterns and differences.
  • Identifying opportunities for improvement: Discover how dashboard data can highlight successes while revealing opportunities to strengthen maternal health care practices and outcomes.
  • Using data to communicate with leadership and staff: Discover how the dashboards can inform and guide conversations with your facility’s leadership, staff, and partners with shared interests by translating complex QI data in easy-to-understand visualizations and key data points that demonstrate your QI initiative’s progress.

VNPC’s maternal health dashboards are innovative tools that can help you transform data into action. By making QI data accessible and easy to understand, our dashboards are supporting healthcare teams to monitor their progress in their own QI journeys, identify areas for growth, and improve maternal health outcomes in their communities.
