Virginia Neonatal Perinatal Collaborative Launches MMRT Dashboard to Support Maternal Health Efforts

Richmond, VA The Virginia Neonatal Perinatal Collaborative (VNPC) has launched a new Maternal Mortality Review Team (MMRT) Dashboard, a tool designed to transform how maternal health data is interpreted and applied across the Commonwealth.

Developed in partnership with the Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME), part of the Viginia Department of Health (VDH), the dashboard consolidates findings from maternal mortality reviews into a centralized, easy-to-use platform. By making this information more accessible, the dashboard aims to support healthcare providers, public health partners, and community partners in identifying trends, understanding contributing factors, and implementing evidence-based recommendations that can drive meaningful improvements.

The MMRT Dashboard features insights and recommendations from the Virginia MMRT, which reviews all pregnancy-associated and pregnancy-related deaths occurring during pregnancy or within one-year postpartum, to determine causes, contributing factors, and opportunities for prevention.  These findings inform recommendations designed to improve maternal health outcomes across the Commonwealth.

To help communities translate data into action, the dashboard includes a Recommendation Summary table that groups similar recommendations into clear, actionable categories. This structure enables healthcare providers, public health partners, and community organizations to identify shared priorities and coordinate efforts to advance maternal health and safety.

“This dashboard is a tangible way of making the work of the Maternal Mortality Review Team accessible to families, researchers, healthcare leaders, or anyone interested in the state of maternal health in the Commonwealth,” said Arthur Ollendorff, MD, VNPC Co-Chair

“This dashboard represents a significant step forward in how we share, interpret, and act on maternal health data in Virginia,” said Shannon Pursell, Senior Director at VNPC. “By making this information more accessible and easier to understand, we are helping partners across the Commonwealth identify where opportunities exist to improve care and outcomes.”

“Our goal was to build something that not only presents the data, but also encourages people to engage with it in a meaningful way,” said Evan Issacs, Data Analyst at VNPC. This dashboard marks an important milestone in an ongoing effort. Additional reports, features, and insights are planned to further support partners across Virginia with the information they need to advance and improve care for mothers and families statewide.
